Opmerkingen

Ukraine's hyperinflation in the early 1990s was among the most severe of the post-Soviet collapses. By 1993, monthly inflation exceeded 65%, and the karbovanets — itself a transitional currency introduced to replace Soviet rubles — was losing value faster than notes could be printed. The million-karbovanets denomination, unthinkable at independence in 1991, became a practical necessity within two years.

P#91A was issued by the Ministry of Finance rather than a central bank, reflecting the ad hoc institutional arrangements of that period — the National Bank of Ukraine was still establishing operational authority over monetary issuance. The karbovanets series was retired entirely in September 1996 when the hryvnia was introduced at a rate of 100,000 karbovantsiv to one hryvnia.
