September 1922", printed in dark brown Fraktur on the same orange-tan guilloche ground with wavy scalloped border. The denomination "Fünfhundert Mark" is set in large ornamental script at centre, beneath the heading "Notgeldschein des Freistaates Mecklenburg-Schwerin", with payment and validity text below; a large diagonal red cancellation cross has been applied across the entire face to invalidate the earlier note, and four manuscript signatures appear at the foot. |

Mecklenburg-Schwerin was one of dozens of German regional and municipal authorities that resorted to emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply denominations fast enough to keep pace with the collapsing mark. By the time million-mark notes were being issued at the state level, the denomination itself was already losing practical value within weeks of printing.
Printed locally in Schwerin rather than through one of the major commercial press houses, which accounts for the comparatively plain execution seen across this series.
