| Obverse description | Orange-tan guilloche underprint with a wavy scalloped dark border framing the entire note. The denomination "EINE MILLION MARK" is printed in large red Fraktur script across the centre, above a body of text in German Gothic type stating that the Hauptstaatskasse in Schwerin will pay the bearer on demand; the date "Schwerin, den 10. August 1923" and the issuer legend "Mecklenburg-Schwerinsches Staatsministerium" appear below. A circular red official seal of the Staatsministerium is at lower left, flanked by large "500" numerals in the underprint — evidence that this note was produced by overprinting on a previously printed 500 Mark sheet — with two manuscript signatures at the foot and a handwritten serial number at upper right. |

Mecklenburg-Schwerin was one of dozens of German regional and municipal authorities that resorted to emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply denominations fast enough to keep pace with the collapsing mark. By the time million-mark notes were being issued at the state level, the denomination itself was already losing practical value within weeks of printing.
Printed locally in Schwerin rather than through one of the major commercial press houses, which accounts for the comparatively plain execution seen across this series.
