Opmerkingen

Haspe was a small industrial town in the Ruhr district — today absorbed into Hagen — and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it issued its own emergency currency when Reichsbank notes simply could not keep pace with hyperinflation. This million-mark note falls squarely in that Notgeld window between the spring and autumn of 1923, when denominations climbed from thousands to billions within months.

G. Kannengiesser was a local Haspe printer, not a specialist banknote firm. Municipal authorities had no choice but to use whoever was available locally, which is why the production quality on these pieces varies considerably across the series.
