The issuer title 'Gutschein der Stadt Haspe' runs along the top in Gothic blackletter script, with the series letter and serial number at upper left and upper right respectively. Within a bold rectangular frame, the denomination 'Eine Million Mark' is set in large Gothic blackletter type, below which a two-line redemption clause in smaller Gothic script is flanked by a faint central vignette of the city arms; the date 'Haspe, den 8. August 1923' appears at lower left, with the Bürgermeister's manuscript countersignature and the title 'Beigeordneter' at lower right. The printer's imprint 'G. Haspe was a small industrial town in the Ruhr district — today absorbed into Hagen — and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it issued its own emergency currency when Reichsbank notes simply could not keep pace with hyperinflation. This million-mark note falls squarely in that Notgeld window between the spring and autumn of 1923, when denominations climbed from thousands to billions within months.
G. Kannengiesser was a local Haspe printer, not a specialist banknote firm. Municipal authorities had no choice but to use whoever was available locally, which is why the production quality on these pieces varies considerably across the series.
