Issued in 1996 as Ukraine was still assembling the institutional framework of an independent state, this coin commemorates Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Hetman whose 1654 Pereyaslav Agreement with Muscovy remains one of the most contested diplomatic acts in Ukrainian history — celebrated for centuries under Soviet historiography as voluntary reunification with Russia, and reinterpreted after 1991 as a coerced or misrepresented pact. The denomination itself, one million karbovantsiv, reflects the hyperinflationary collapse of the transitional currency that Ukraine abandoned that same year when the hryvnia was introduced in September 1996.
