Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG was one of the great integrated steel and mining combines of the Ruhr — part of Hugo Stinnes's industrial empire, which by 1923 had grown to encompass hundreds of companies across coal, steel, shipping, and press. This billion-Mark note was issued by the Friedrich Wilhelms-Hütte division in Mülheim as emergency notgeld, a legal necessity once hyperinflation made Reichsbank supply functionally useless for meeting weekly payrolls.
Stinnes died in April 1923; the combine began unraveling shortly after, collapsing entirely by 1925.
