Brazil's Banco Central has issued commemorative zero-denomination notes before — the 0 Real Pix in 2022 being the most recent precedent — so this piece follows an established institutional format rather than being a novelty outlier. Zero-denomination notes carry no legal tender status; they function as collector instruments and public education pieces, issued free of charge or through official channels at face value of nothing.
2025 marks the centenary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Cristo Redentor statue on Corcovado, construction having begun in 1922 and completed in 1931. The centennial hook is the editorial reason this note exists at all.
