Oberthur Fiduciaire produced this souvenir zero-euro note under the EuroSouvenir program, the collector series launched in 2015 that repurposed genuine banknote printing infrastructure — security thread, watermark, intaglio-quality stock — to issue legally denominated but monetarily valueless notes tied to tourist sites. Schloss Oberhausen, a neo-Gothic castle in the Ruhr city of Oberhausen, is better known today as a venue for cultural events than as aristocratic architecture, having been repurposed extensively through the twentieth century.
The series intentionally mimics the physical credibility of circulating currency, which has made authentication of the souvenir notes themselves an occasional problem for retailers unfamiliar with the program.
