EuroSouvenir's zero-denomination pula note sits in an awkward but deliberate commercial niche — legal tender for exactly nothing, produced by a licensed euro printer and distributed through tourist outlets as a collectible souvenir. Oberthur Fiduciaire, the printer here, holds genuine ECB security printing contracts, which is precisely why these novelty issues carry the visual credibility they do despite having no monetary function whatsoever.
The pula is Botswana's national currency, introduced in 1976 to replace the rand at parity. The word means "rain" in Setswana — a blessing in a largely arid country.
