These collector pieces carry legal tender status under EU law — a deliberate quirk — despite a face value that makes them economically inert. Oberthur prints them to genuine banknote security specifications, including UV-reactive inks and microprinting, which is what separates them from ordinary novelty items and sustains the secondary market.
