Frédéric Mistral — the nineteenth-century Provençal poet and co-founder of the Félibrige movement — won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904, one of very few writers ever honored in a language other than a major national tongue. His Occitan, not French, was the declared medium of the prize committee's recognition.
