Bogliaco, on the western shore of Lake Garda, housed one of several Italian prisoner-of-war camps that issued their own internal scrip during the Second World War. These camp currencies were a practical administrative measure — preventing prisoners from accumulating Italian legal tender that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with local civilians.
The issuing authority, Campo Concentramento Prigionieri di Guerra di Bogliaco, falls within a broader class of Italian PoW camp money that remains poorly documented. Individual denominations from smaller camps like Bogliaco survive in genuinely small numbers, as most scrip was recalled and destroyed when camps closed or populations were transferred.
