Bogliaco, on the western shore of Lake Garda, housed one of several Italian prisoner-of-war camps that issued their own internal scrip during the Second World War. These camp currencies were a practical administrative measure — preventing prisoners from accumulating Italian legal tender that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with local civilians.
