Menainon was a small Sikel settlement in the interior of Sicily, modern Mineo, which gained civic coinage rights under Roman provincial administration following the First Punic War. Bronze issues of this type represent the community asserting a municipal identity during a period when many Sicilian mints were being consolidated or suppressed outright. CNS (Corpus Nummorum Siculorum) attribution places this among the earliest recognized emissions from the mint.
