Rhegion's bronze coinage of this period reflects the city's tenuous recovery after 387 BC, when Dionysius I of Syracuse destroyed the city and sold its surviving population into slavery. Resettled under new colonists by Dionysus II and later reorganized as a free city, Rhegion resumed civic coinage as a deliberate assertion of restored autonomy. The range of references spanning SNG ANS, Morcom, and Copenhagen attests to how widely this type dispersed in antiquity — unsurprising for a port city controlling the Strait of Messina.
