Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Archbishop of Salzburg from 1587, was among the most politically ambitious ecclesiastical rulers of his age — and one of the most reckless. His prolonged conflict with Bavaria over the salt trade ultimately led to his forced abdication in 1612 and imprisonment in Hohensalzburg fortress, where he died in 1617. These small silver pieces were struck across the final decade of his reign, a period increasingly dominated by that dispute and by his controversial relationship with Salome Alt, by whom he had fifteen children.
