Leopold III inherited Tyrol through the 1363 cession by Margarete Maultasch, who transferred the county to the Habsburgs partly to spite the Wittelsbachs. His administration consolidated Austrian control over the critical Brenner Pass trade corridor, and the coinage of this period reflects that — Tyrolean silver issues circulated heavily among merchants moving between Italy and the northern markets, giving them a transactional character rather than a ceremonial one.
Leopold died at Sempach in 1386, killed in the disastrous engagement against the Swiss Confederacy where Habsburg cavalry dismounted to fight on foot with fatal results.
