Obverse description Central field features the elaborate tughra of Sultan Mahmud II rendered in fine relief, enclosed within a bold rayed or star-pointed border composed of alternating triangular projections with dotted interstices forming a distinctive serrated outer ring. The tughra, the imperial calligraphic monogram of the sultan, dominates the flan and is executed in the characteristic Ottoman style with interlocking loops and upward projecting shafts. The word 'Adil' (The Just), an epithet of the sultan, appears in the field in Arabic script. The overall design is characteristic of early nineteenth-century Ottoman gold coinage.
