Temir Toqa — known in Russian sources as Timur Kutlug — governed the Crimean Ulus during the formative decades when the Golden Horde's administrative apparatus was still being assembled out of the wreckage of the Mongol conquest. The yarmaqs of this period are among the earliest silver issues struck in Crimea under Jochid authority, predating the more systematized coinage of the later khans. The mint at Qrim, modern Stary Krym, became the commercial hub of the peninsula partly because of its position on overland routes connecting the Black Sea ports to the interior steppe.
