The circular legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer') is distributed around the cross, with the date 1679 incorporated within the legend at the top. A beaded border frames the entire design. The reverse composition is characteristic of Portuguese silver coinage of the period, evoking the Christian crusading tradition. |

Pedro served as prince regent from 1668 after forcing his mentally unstable brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra, where Afonso died under house arrest in 1683. Pedro's regency coinage was issued under his own name and titles rather than his brother's, a pointed numismatic declaration of who actually governed. This piece belongs to that interregnum period before Pedro was formally crowned Pedro II in 1683.
The 2 vinténs denomination — a vintém being twenty réis — had long roots in Portuguese monetary reckoning, though by the late seventeenth century the silver content of such small denominations was under persistent pressure from wartime finance.
