| Popis rubu | A plain, bold cross with extended arms divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing a quatrefoil or four-pellet rosette motif. The cross reaches nearly to the beaded border, giving the design a strong heraldic character. The circular legend IN·HOC·SIGNO·VINCES ('In this sign, thou shalt conquer') is distributed around the periphery in Latin capitals, interrupted by the arms of the cross. The entire composition is enclosed within a well-defined beaded border. This reverse type is consistent with Portuguese silver coinage of the Prince Regent Pedro period. |

This minor silver issue belongs to the regency period of Pedro, who governed Portugal in place of his incapacitated brother Afonso VI — whom he had effectively deposed, confined first to the Azores and then to Sintra, where Afonso died in 1683. The political fiction of a "Prince Regent" issuing coinage rather than a king reflects the legal awkwardness Pedro navigated for years before formally ascending the throne as Pedro II.
