| Obverse lettering | +IOANNES IIII DG REX POR IoIIII XXXX (Translation: João IV (Value of the coin XXXX = 40 réis)) |
| Reverse description | A plain Greek cross occupies the central field, with the mint letter 'E' (for Évora) placed in each of the four angles formed by the arms of the cross. On specimens struck from an amended Lisbon die, the 'E' appears over a previously punched 'O', reflecting the reuse and alteration of dies at the Évora mint. The peripheral Latin legend runs around the entire coin. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of mid-seventeenth-century Portuguese hammered silver coinage. |
