Obverse description Central field displays the royal cipher 'IOIII' (João III) in large Roman numerals beneath a large Portuguese crown with fleurs-de-lis finials, all within a beaded inner circle. Below the cipher, a row of five pellets or quinas symbols is visible. The surrounding legend reads '+ D REX PORTVGALIE AL' in Gothic lettering, separated by pellets, running clockwise along the periphery of the irregularly shaped hammered flan.
