| Reverse description | Central design features a plain Greek cross with a quatrefoil (four-petalled rosette) ornament in each of the four angles formed by the arms of the cross, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The cross is bold and evenly proportioned, occupying the majority of the field. The quatrefoils are rendered in a stylised floral form consistent with Portuguese hammered silver coinage of João III. The surrounding legend in Latin reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer'), separated by stops, with notable spelling variants across the recorded die varieties. The coin's irregular flan and variable strike are characteristic of the Porto mint production of this era. |
