| Obverse description | Royal crown occupying the upper field, with floriate ornamentation, above the royal monogram IO·III in two lines, surmounted by the designation XXXX (denoting 40 reais) in the lower field. A circular legend surrounds the design within a beaded border, reading variants of IOANES T REX PORTVGALIE AL D (King João III of Portugal and the Algarves). The overall style is characteristic of Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. |

| Reverse description | Plain cross pattée dividing the field into four quarters, each containing a large quadrifoil (four-lobed rosette) in high relief, all within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer'), also within a beaded border. The design is bold and well-centred, consistent with the hammered coinage tradition of the Porto mint under João III. |
