Additional information

Filipe I of Portugal was Filipe II of Spain — the same monarch who launched the Armada against England in 1588. His accession to the Portuguese throne in 1580 followed the dynastic crisis triggered by King Sebastião's death at Alcácer Quibir two years earlier, leaving no direct heir. Portuguese coinage of this union period deliberately maintained native denominations and mint practices rather than absorbing them into Castilian standards, a concession designed to pacify Portuguese nobility and honor the terms of the Cortes of Tomar.

Gomes distinguishes two varieties for this type, F1 04 and F1 05, differentiated by die details at the Lisbon mint.
