Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the escutcheon bearing the traditional quinas (five shields arranged in cross formation, each charged with five bezants) and surrounded by the castles of the bordure — set within a lightly ornamented surround. The royal crown, rendered in relief, surmounts the shield. The circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, partially visible due to the irregular flan typical of hammered coinage. The overall style is consistent with mid-17th century Portuguese hammered silver production.
