Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the quintas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) within a bordure of castles, surmounted by a royal crown of open arched form. The shield is rendered in the hammered style characteristic of mid-17th-century Portuguese coinage, with irregular flan edges. A beaded inner border frames the design, and the Latin legend ALPHONSVS · VI · D G runs partially around the periphery in capital letters, attributing the obverse die to King Afonso VI.
