| Description de l’avers | Central field bears the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in cross) and the bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is rendered in the late medieval heraldic style characteristic of hammered Iberian coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PHILIPPVS : I : D : G : REX : POR, identifying the issuer as Philip I, King of Portugal by the grace of God. The flan is irregular in shape with a slightly ragged rim, consistent with hand-hammered production. The die is somewhat off-center, as is typical for this series. |

A circular Latin legend surrounds the denomination mark, reading PORTVGALIE : ALGARB, a reference to the royal titles of Portugal and the Algarve. Pellets and decorative stops punctuate the legend.
