Reverse description The reverse displays a large, boldly struck denomination mark 'XX' in Roman numerals occupying the majority of the field, denoting the coin's value of 20 Réis (one Vintém). The numerals are rendered in a characteristic late 16th-century style with splayed strokes, each character intersecting at center. A circular Latin legend surrounds the denomination mark, reading PORTVGALIE : ALGARB, a reference to the royal titles of Portugal and the Algarve. Pellets and decorative stops punctuate the legend. The flan exhibits the typical irregular outline and surface texture of hammered silver coinage, and the strike shows minor weakness consistent with the variety.
