Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms, depicting the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) within a shield surmounted by a royal crown. The mint marks 'L' and 'G' appear flanking the shield to the left and right respectively, accompanied by decorative star ornaments in the field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The strike is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century hammered coinage, with typical surface irregularities and uneven flan.
