Wooden nickels issued by Canadian municipalities in the late 1950s were almost exclusively tied to centennial or homecoming celebrations — civic events that needed low-cost promotional scrip that felt novel enough to keep. Niagara Falls issued this piece in 1959 to coincide with the spring tourist push, when the city aggressively marketed the cherry and apple blossom season along the Niagara escarpment as a secondary draw to the falls themselves.
