Amedeus VIII ruled Savoy during a period of aggressive territorial consolidation, acquiring Piedmont in 1401 and ultimately elevating the county to a duchy in 1416 — the very year this issue's production ceased. The billon obol, fractional and low-value, would have circulated heavily among peasants and small traders throughout the Alpine passes that were Savoy's chief economic arteries.
Amedeus later abdicated in 1434 to live as a hermit at Ripaille, before being elected antipope Felix V in 1439 — the last antipope in Church history.
