| Obverse description | The Portuguese royal coat of arms, surmounted by a crown, occupies the central field. The shield displays the characteristic Portuguese armillary sphere and castle motifs in cast relief. The mint letters D and A flank the shield to the left and right respectively, identifying the Damão mint. The entire design is enclosed within a raised circular border. |

The "Wheel of 5 Bazarucos" denomination was peculiar to Portuguese enclaves on the Indian subcontinent, where the bazaruco functioned as the smallest unit of account in local trade — a coin for markets, not for Lisbon's accounting ledgers. Damão's mint operated with considerably less oversight than Goa's, and the output shows it: die alignment and flan preparation varied substantially across the João V issues, making uniform survivors genuinely uncommon.
Nickel brass was chosen to resist the coastal humidity that consumed copper issues within a generation of striking.
