Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, featuring the quartered escutcheon with castles and quinas (five bezants), surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The crowned shield is rendered in relief in a style characteristic of cast coinage from the Goa Mint during the reign of João V. The mintmaster's initials G-A appear in the field, flanking the shield. The overall design reflects the simplified heraldic conventions adopted for Portuguese Indian colonial coinage of the early eighteenth century.
