Adolph de la Marck's tenure as Prince-Bishop of Liège was defined less by ecclesiastical governance than by constant conflict with the city's burghers and neighboring lords. The volant — a fractional denomination peculiar to the Low Countries monetary system of the early fourteenth century — circulated in a region where political fragmentation made small silver fractions essential for daily trade, with no single authority commanding enough trust for larger denominations to function reliably.
