Obverse description Royal arms of Portugal displayed on a shield at centre, surmounted by a royal crown with decorative arches and cross finial. The shield bears the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants. The crowned arms are set within a circular Latin legend reading the king's titles, separated by dot stops. The die work is characteristic of late 16th-century Portuguese hammered coinage, with the design occupying most of the flan.
