| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned royal cipher of Manuel I, comprising an interlaced Gothic 'M' surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials. The mint mark 'L' for Lisbon appears to the right of the cipher, with annulets (small circles) flanking the monogram on either side and one below. The design is contained within a beaded inner circle. A Latin legend runs along the outer border, partially legible due to the hammered fabric of the coin. |
