Vintém - José I Lisbon mint

The vintém was a unit of account long before it became a consistent physical coin, its value fixed at 20 réis — a figure so embedded in Portuguese daily commerce that the name outlasted the monetary system that produced it. José I's reign saw a broader effort to rationalize the coinage after decades of inconsistency under João V, though the tiny silver vintém remained notoriously difficult to strike cleanly at this diameter and weight, and planchet preparation for the denomination was frequently irregular.

The Lisbon mint during this period operated under supervision of the Casa da Moeda, which relocated to new premises in 1755 following the earthquake that destroyed much of the city.
