Reverse description Central device displays the Portuguese royal arms: a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five roundels) and the bordure of castles, surmounted by a Gothic crown. The shield is set within a raised inner circle, and a circular Latin legend reading the royal titles of João II surrounds the entire device. The lettering is separated from the central device by a beaded border. The hammered workmanship produces a characteristic uneven surface consistent with late medieval Iberian minting practice.
