| Obverse description | Central field displays the Gothic royal cipher of João II — a large crowned 'Y' monogram — surmounted by an ornate crown. Flanking the monogram in the field are the mint marks: an inverted 'L' to the left and a small 'o' to the right, identifying the Lisbon mint. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, separated by pellets, reads IOHAИES : II : R : P : ET : A : D : G, rendered in Gothic lettering and abbreviated from the king's full royal titulature. |
