Obverse description Central field displays the Gothic initial 'Y' (Iohanes) surmounted by a royal crown, flanked on each side by a small raised annulet (circle) in the field. The crowned initial is rendered in bold relief characteristic of late medieval Portuguese hammered coinage. A circular legend surrounds the central device, separated from the field by a plain inner ring. The inscription records the king's name in Latin, with lettering style varying across die varieties.
