The Kosala janapada punched its coinage during a period when the kingdom was one of the dominant mahajanapadas of the Gangetic plain, controlling trade routes between the eastern passes and the subcontinent's interior. Kosala's political eclipse came swiftly — absorbed into Magadha under the Nanda dynasty by the mid-4th century BC, which effectively ended independent Kosalan issues. The punch-marked series attributed to Kosala is distinguished by its regional banker's marks, added after minting as individual merchants and money-changers validated pieces in circulation.
