Leopold III acquired Tyrol through the 1363 inheritance settlement that brought the county into Habsburg hands following Margaret Maultasch's abdication, and these small silver pieces were struck during his direct rule of the Tirolean territories before the Habsburg partition of 1379 split dynastic responsibilities. The Merano mint had served as the primary silver-striking facility for Tyrol since the thirteenth century, sustained by ore from the nearby Schwaz region before that mining district reached its full late-medieval output.
Leopold died at Sempach in 1386, killed fighting the Swiss Confederation — the same battle that produced the Wilhelm Tell mythology.
