| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field bears the Portuguese royal coat of arms — a shield quartered with the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and the castle bordure of Castile — surmounted by a crown. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, with the surrounding legend running along the coin's periphery. The design is characteristic of the mid-16th century Portuguese hammered coinage, rendered with bold but somewhat crude die workmanship typical of the period. |
