Austrian municipal notgeld from the immediate postwar inflation period, when the collapse of the krone left local governments scrambling to issue their own emergency scrip to keep commerce moving. Wachau as an issuing authority is uncommon — most surviving notgeld from this region is attributed to individual towns like Krems or Melk rather than the Marktgemeinde designation, making this a comparatively rare administrative variant.
Aggstein, referenced in the note's title, is the ruined medieval castle overlooking the Danube gorge — its appearance on local scrip was typical of the civic pride municipalities invested in these otherwise desperate instruments.
