The tamgha, a dynastic or tribal ownership mark, is rendered in a bold, angular style. The Sogdian legend encircles the central device within a beaded border. The inscription is partially worn and difficult to resolve fully, consistent with the irregular flan and hammered manufacture. |

The Otrar oasis, situated on the Syr Darya in what is now southern Kazakhstan, functioned as an independent monetary zone well into the Abbasid period, issuing its own bronze coinage rather than adopting the reformed copper fulus introduced across the caliphate after 696 AD. Smirnova's catalog remains the primary reference for these issues, many of which survive in poor condition due to the alkaline soils of the region.
