Reverse description A stylised horse depicted in right-facing profile, rendered in the characteristic abstracted Celtic artistic tradition. The upper front legs are doubled, a distinctive typological feature of this issue. A star device appears below the tail in the lower field. The tribal ruler's name, ESUPRASU, appears divided in two registers as IISVP above and RASV below the horse.

Additional information

The Corieltauvi occupied a broad territory across what is now the East Midlands, and their coinage — among the latest British Iron Age issues — continued into the early years of Roman occupation. This particular unit type is attributed to the period immediately before or coinciding with the Claudian conquest of 43 AD, making it one of the last expressions of independent tribal minting in the region. The tribe submitted to Rome relatively early, and coinage production almost certainly ceased within a few years of the legions reaching their territory.
