Obverse description Draped bust of King Aphilas facing right, crowned and wearing a triangular ribbon projecting behind the head, with the right hand holding a staff or scepter. The effigy is flanked on each side by a upright grain stalk, emblematic of royal agricultural abundance. Above the bust, a pellet set upon a crescent divides the encircling Greek legend. The coin is bordered by a distinctive series of fish-hook-like ornaments suspended downward from a continuous outer circle, a characteristic decorative element of early Aksumite gold coinage.
